Snake Quick Facts
Most poisonous snakes are considered to be a part of a group identified as pit vipers. All pit vipers will have a deep pit on both sides of their head, situated halfway between the eye and nostril. These pits are not present on non poisonous snakes. The pupils of non poisonous snakes are perfectly round as opposed to those of pit vipers. Pit vipers pupils are vertically elliptical or egg shaped. On pit vipers, the underside of the tail will have scales that go all the way across in a single row however, on the very tip of the tail, in some cases there may be two rows. In contrast, nonpoisonous snakes, on the underside of the tails have scales that are primarily in two rows all the way from the vent of the snake to the tip of the tail. In both cases, skin that is shed shows the same characteristics.
