Spring Bat Removal in Utah: Why March–April Is Your Best Window
Of all the times to remove bats in Utah, March and April are the most strategically valuable. Here’s the biology, the law, and what you should do right now.
Why Spring Is Utah’s Prime Exclusion Window
- Colony assembled, no pups yet: Migratory bat species return to Utah roosts in March–April — before the May 1 maternity season. Exclusion now removes the complete colony with no flightless pups present.
- Full legal window before May 1: After May 1, UDWR prohibits exclusion until August 15. Spring gives you the most time to act before that door closes.
- Prevent another breeding season: Spring exclusion stops this year’s breeding cycle entirely — no colony growth, no guano accumulation for another summer.
- Better scheduling availability: Fall (post-August) is peak season. Spring often means faster inspection slots and more scheduling flexibility.
What’s Happening in Utah Attics Right Now
Late February–March: bats emerge from canyon hibernacula and return to summer roosts. March–April: females form pre-maternity aggregations in warm attics. Late April: females become pregnant — pups developing but not yet born. May 1: UDWR exclusion restriction begins.
