Utah Bat-Proofing Checklist: 15 Entry Points to Inspect on Your Home

Utah Bat-Proofing Checklist: 15 Entry Points to Inspect on Your Home

Preventing bats starts with knowing where to look. Bats squeeze through openings as small as ¼ inch. This checklist covers the 15 most common bat entry points on Utah homes, ranked by frequency.

⚠️ Important: Do not seal any entry point if bats are present inside, use exclusion devices first. Do not seal during May 1–August 15 maternity season.

The 15 Entry Points

  1. Gable vents, corroded screens pull away from frames after 20–30 years. Check all edges.
  2. Ridge cap gaps, gap opens between cap and roofing material. Check full ridge line.
  3. Fascia board separations, wood shrinks in Utah’s dry climate. Check fascia-to-soffit junction.
  4. Soffit-to-wall junctions, separation is very common. Look for daylight at this line.
  5. Chimney-to-roofline gaps, check flashing on all four chimney sides.
  6. Chimney cap screens, mesh rusts and holes develop. Check for gaps >¼ inch.
  7. Utility penetrations, every electrical/HVAC/cable line entry. Is the gap filled?
  8. Dryer vents, flap stuck open or frame gaps. Check cover integrity.
  9. Roof turbines and power vents, base flashing gaps develop as sealants age.
  10. Dormer junctions, inspect all four junction points on every dormer.
  11. Brick mortar gaps, especially roofline courses, window perimeters (pre-1960 homes).
  12. Stucco cracks (southern Utah), any crack >¼ inch, especially at expansion joints.
  13. Weep screed gaps (stucco), the drainage gap at stucco wall base. Check integrity.
  14. Window/door frame perimeters, gaps at upper-story frames visible from attic.
  15. Foundation-to-wall transitions, inspect full perimeter at this junction.

What to Do With What You Find

No bat evidence: Seal proactively with appropriate materials before May 1 or after August 15.
Evidence of bat use (staining, droppings): Call a licensed professional, do not seal without exclusion devices. (801) 675-8829
