Bat Removal Process
What to expect at every stage of a UDWR-licensed bat exclusion, from the first inspection through the written warranty.
If you have never had professional bat work done before, the process can feel opaque. This page walks through exactly what happens after you call, how long each phase takes, and what your home looks like when the job is done.
Step 1: Inspection and written estimate
A licensed technician performs a comprehensive inspection of the property:
- Full exterior roofline walk. Every potential entry point gets checked, including gable vents, ridge caps, soffit gaps, fascia, chimney junctions, and utility penetrations. Bats can enter through any gap a quarter inch or larger.
- Attic interior assessment. Colony size is estimated from guano patterns, primary roost clusters are identified, and contamination extent is documented.
- Species identification. Critical for UDWR compliance, colony size expectations, and exclusion timing.
- Written report and itemized estimate. You receive the estimate before any work begins. No surprises.
Time: 30 to 90 minutes depending on property size. Cost: Free.
Step 2: One-way exclusion installation
Professional one-way exclusion devices go over every active bat entry point. Bats exit normally at dusk to feed but cannot re-enter. Inactive secondary entry points are permanently sealed during the same visit.
Time: 2 to 6 hours depending on entry point count. Timing constraint: Exclusion work must be done outside the May 1 to August 15 maternity season, when flightless pups would be trapped inside.
Step 3: Colony monitoring period
We allow 3 to 7 days for the entire colony to exit through the exclusion devices. Every bat exits nightly to feed, so by day 7 the colony has cleared and cannot return. You may notice bats clustering around the exclusion site at dusk during this period. That is expected behavior, not a problem.
Time: 3 to 7 days. No action needed from you.
Step 4: Permanent sealing
The crew returns, removes the exclusion devices, and permanently seals every identified entry point using UV-stable, climate-rated materials designed for Utah temperature extremes. A final exterior inspection confirms the structure is bat-free.
Time: 1 to 4 hours. Includes written warranty.
Step 5: Guano cleanup and insulation restoration (optional)
If significant guano accumulation was found during inspection, a dedicated cleanup service is scheduled. This is strongly recommended for any colony that was active for more than one season. See our bat guano cleanup and attic restoration page for the full process.
